A Guided Tour..

The journey continues..              Stage - 3/8

THE 'LINEN PRESS' ROOM - part II

Just briefly, we're now facing the other end of this small room towards a table that usually has at least a couple of chairs around it.

To the left, through the doorway you can see (to the left of the flickering gaslight) the light emanating from the open back door. On our right, a large mirror - nicely located to quickly check-out your hair-do, prior to someone at the bar, pointing out that it looks as if somebody has left a 'cow pat' on your head.

The window in front, looks into a miniature room - located off the Pool Room - but once was outside. This room currently houses a couple of modern gaming machines (as gas powered ones have not yet been located), the main purpose of these machines - it would appear - is to remind us what today's date and currency really is.

THE SCULLERY

As we look ahead into the Scullery, you will notice the uneven brick-tiled floor, the large Range with adjacent cupboards containing two large stone basins - set in such a fashion - which at sometime, would have allowed heating from the Range.

The doorway on the left, enters the Pool Room. The window ahead, looks out into the secluded courtyard. The original gas chandelier has had to have supporting chains added to maintain stability. The problem is, that with later generations, peoples heads are much nearer tops of doorways - and bottoms of gaslights.

An interesting feature is that of the 13 old ceiling hooks - originally there to support game? All but one of the hooks face in the same direction, only one faces the other way, why?

Incidentally, irrespective of any alcohol induced courage - sitting in one of the cupboards basins, whilst sipping Bitter and smoking a cigarette is strictly not allowed - believe me!

The last picture on this page is the view from the far end of the Scullery - looking back towards the 'Linen Press Room' (left), and the Pool Room entrance, just visible on the right.
